Biography
Originally from South Korea, Dr. Sur Ah Hahn joined the Western Carolina faculty in
the fall of 2013 after receiving her MSW and Ph.D. in social work from the University
of Kansas. She also received a Master of Arts in Women’s Studies at Ewha Women’s University
in Seoul, South Korea, and worked as a researcher, policy advocate, and community
educator on women’s issues in her home country for more than ten years. Dr. Hahn specializes
in research pertaining to violence against women, women’s health, and cultural diversity.
In 2012, Dr. Hahn was selected as the awardee of the International Fellowship Program
from the American Association of University of Women (AAUW) for her dissertation research
on the integration of clinical and advocacy in social work practice with intimate
partner violence (IPV) survivors in the US. Recent studies at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµinclude the best
practice for economic empowerment of IPV survivors and pedagogical consideration in
teaching Implicit Bias for college students. Dr. Hahn presented her study findings
at national and international conferences, including the Society for Social Work Research,
the Joint World Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development, and the
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Commons Conference.
