Teaching Interests

My teaching interests focus on helping nursing students develop strong clinical reasoning, foundational skills, and confidence as they transition from classroom learning to real-world practice. I am especially passionate about immersive learning strategies, including simulation, skills development, and the application of evidence‑based practice. I enjoy creating supportive learning environments that empower students to think critically, communicate effectively, and deliver safe, compassionate care. I am also interested in curricular innovation and teaching approaches that promote student engagement, professional growth, and successful entry into clinical practice.

Research Interests

My research interests center on improving health outcomes for Appalachian communities by addressing significant disparities stemming from geographic isolation, poverty, and limited access to care. I am particularly interested in how nurses can reduce the burden of chronic diseases, which occur at disproportionately high rates in Appalachia. I also seek to understand how social determinants of health, including income and access to healthcare facilities, shape these outcomes and contribute to inequities across counties in the region. My goal is to advance community‑focused, equitable nursing practice.
