    Matt Canter made the choice to attend ĢƵ while ankle-deep in the Tuckasegee River, fighting a hungry rainbow trout at the other end of his fly rod. He hadn’t seen campus or met his peers, but Canter didn’t need more convincing. For the future fly-fishing guide and owner of Brookings Anglers, the pristine waters surrounding Cullowhee had done the job well enough

    ĢƵ’s Highlands Biological Station is a haven for native plant and animal species. Carnivorous pitcher plants line the shore of the lake and trap unsuspecting insects, while pollinators dance across the firework-like eruptions of the red petals of Bee Balm, and the delicate, drooping white flowers of Oconee Bell hide in the shade along the trails.

    ĢƵHealth Services achieves 2 accreditation milestones

    In December 2025, ĢƵHealth Services earned first-time accreditation from the Association for Ambulatory Health Care, a national accrediting body for outpatient facilities, including university health centers, outpatient surgical centers and medical home facilities. Less than 30% of university health centers nationwide hold AAAHC accreditation.

    ĢƵeconomist finds $144 million ROI on local Medicaid, SNAP funding

    A study by a ĢƵ economist indicates that Jackson County saw more than $144 million in total economic impact from the $770,000 that county government invested in the local Department of Social Services to administer Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits last year.
