Supplemental Benefits

UNC and NCFlex Benefits - NCFlex is a state-sponsored benefits program that offers supplemental benefits to eligible employees. Life insurance is offered through the UNC System Office. These benefits give enrolled employees peace of mind and opportunities to save. Browse the UNC and NCFlex options offered to ĢƵemployees below.
  • The NCFlex Dental Plan offers three plan levels provided through MetLife: High Option, Classic Option and Low Option. Each option allows you to select a dentist of your choice and you can select “network providers” as well. Each are traditional plans that pay benefits based on usual, customary and reasonable charges. When an employee enrolls outside of his/her initial 30-day eligibility period, waiting periods may apply for certain services.   • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work between 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) and 40 hours per week (1.0 FTE) are eligible to enroll in a dental plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
  • The NCFlex Vision Plan offers three plan levels of benefits, administered by EyeMed Vision Care. Participants in this plan can choose in-network providers or out-of-network providers. See below for plan comparisons and information, or visit the  for complete details.
  • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
  • The NCFlex Accident Plan offers two plan levels of benefits, administered by Voya. The plan is designed to provide specific benefit payments directly to the covered member for specific injuries and events resulting from a covered accident.   • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
  • ĢƵoffers eligible employees a group term life insurance plan through the UNC System, in partnership with Securian Financial, to help employees and their family members have financial security in the event of a death. The plan offers an added Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit for employee coverage, at no cost. See below for plan information, or visit the  for complete details.
  • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater, on a 9 month or greater recurring contract, are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
    • Dependent Eligibility - Dependent Children are eligible for coverage up to the age of 26. Legal Spouses and Qualified Domestic Partners are eligible for coverage.
  • The NCFlex Health Care Flexible Spending Account, administered by P&A Group, allows employees to set aside a portion of their pay pretax to use for medical, dental, and vision expenses that are not covered by insurance, or only partially covered.   • Faculty and Staff can save money on taxes by paying for eligible out-of-pocket medical, dental, vision, or other qualifying expenses for themselves and their eligible dependents (as defined by the IRS) with pre-tax dollars.
  • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater are eligible to enroll in a flexible spending account.
  • The NCFlex Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account, administered by P&A Group, allows employees to set aside a portion of their pay pretax to use for child care/elder care expenses that are not covered by insurance, or only partially covered.   • The Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account offers faculty and staff a tax-free way to pay themselves back for eligible dependent care expenses throughout the year.
  • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater are eligible to enroll in a flexible spending account.
  • The NCFlex Critical Illness Plan, administered by Voya, pays a benefit if a covered individual is diagnosed with a critical illness. Employees can choose a benefit amount of $15,000, $25,000 or $40,000. See below for plan comparisons and information, or visit the  for complete details.
  • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
  • The Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance Plan, administered by Securian Financial, can pay a benefit if an employee suffers a loss as the result of a covered accident while insured under the plan. It also pays a benefit if an employee suffers certain disabling injuries while covered. The plan includes two levels, Core and Voluntary.   • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater, on a 9 month or greater recurring contract, are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
  • Core AD&D Plan Information: The Core AD&D plan is a $10,000 benefit that is available at no cost to all employees eligible for benefits. Emergency travel services are also available. Employees must enroll as a new hire or during annual enrollment. The benefit is at no cost, but eligible employees must enroll to receive the coverage.
  • Voluntary AD&D Plan Information: Employees may enroll in voluntary AD&D for themselves and eligible dependents. Benefit amounts range from $50,000 up to $500,000 at $50,000 increments. Emergency travel services are also available. Employees can choose from two coverage levels: Employee Only or Employee + Family
  • The NCFlex Cancer & Specified Disease Plan offers three plan levels provided through Allstate Benefits: Low Option, High Option, and Premium Option. All three options feature a Wellness Benefit. See below for plan comparisons and information, or visit the  for complete details.
  • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.
  • The UNC System offers eligible employees a low-cost legal service through MetLife Legal Plans. Employees who pay for this program have access to a wide array of legal services to meet personal and family needs.   • Eligibility: Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater, for nine or more months per year on a recurring basis, are eligible to participate in MetLife Legal Plans. Eligible dependents and legal spouses are also covered.
