teach high school science. Students can choose a concentration in biology, chemistry,
earth sciences or physics. Graduates receive licensure to teach grades 9-12 in North

Where You'll Go
Courses in the program are balanced between courses in your area of concentration
and courses in teaching methods, classroom design and leadership. Science courses
include hands-on experience in the field such as hydrology research along area streams,
exploring natural products chemistry in partnership with area companies or studying
plant science at the Highlands Biological Station. Students complete internships and
student teaching experiences with mentorship from dedicated, experienced teachers
and guidance from Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµfaculty. They also have opportunity to participate in undergraduate
research conferences and work with after-school and tutoring programs.

The Secondary Science Education B.S.Ed. program at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ prepares
students to teach high school science in North Carolina. The program emphasizes student-centered
teaching, inquiry-based learning, and strong content knowledge in biology, chemistry,
earth sciences, or physics.
Students gain hands-on experience through field research, laboratory work, and student
teaching, developing the skills and confidence to engage diverse learners in secondary
science classrooms. Graduates leave the program licensed to teach grades 9–12 with
a strong foundation in pedagogy, scientific inquiry, and experiential learning.
The program reflects the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards and prepares
students to be informed, effective, and innovative inquiry-based science teachers.
Graduates are highly qualified to teach multiple sciences and are eligible for reciprocal
licensure in more than 40 states.
Graduates are licensed to teach biology and other sciences at the secondary level
in North Carolina. The concentration emphasizes scientific inquiry, experiential learning,
and preparation for careers in education and science outreach.
Graduates leave the program prepared to teach chemistry and general science with strong
hands-on and inquiry-based skills, ready to inspire high school students.
Graduates are licensed to teach Earth Sciences and other sciences, prepared to bring
field-based learning into secondary classrooms while fostering environmental awareness.
Graduates are licensed to teach physics and general science in secondary schools,
equipped with inquiry-based teaching skills and a strong foundation in scientific
research.
Graduates are eligible for licensure as school psychologists in North Carolina and
are prepared to meet professional standards in schools.
