New Student Information

Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ is committed to ensuring equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities and supports their civil rights as provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), its amendments (ADAAA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

The OAR seeks to foster an inclusive campus environment that is designed with accessibility in mind. Our aim is to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to identify and remove course, program, or cmapus barriers that may prevent equal access to education and an equitable campus experience for individuals with disabilities while promoting self-advocacy and providing support to foster stduent learning and engagement.

How to Register with OAR

Academic Accommodations are intended to remove or reduce institutional barriers so that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to learn, to demonstrate learning, and to participate equally in the programs and activities of the university, despite barriers that might exist in course policies, course materials, or course design. Students are responsible for fulfilling all course and program requirements with or without accommodation.

Academic accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis through an interactive process that considers each individual's functional limitations, disability history, request, and the essential elements of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵprograms, services, and activities.

If you need academic accommodations in order to participate equally, follow the steps below.

Once you are in the New Student AIM Portal, select New Student Application and complete the online registration form. You can upload your current documentation through the links given. See the OAR Documentation Guidelines for information about what types of documentation are needed.

The OAR will contact you within 15 business days of your application to request more information or to arrange for a Welcome Meeting. At that meeting we will discuss your disability, your documentation, your history of accommodation, and what barriers you might be experiencing.

After this meeting, the OAR will send you an email listing what accommodations we are approving for you and instructions for next steps, including how to send your Letters of Accommodation to your instructors.

Types of Accommodations

Typically, accommodations fall under the following categories:

  • Testing accommodations
    • Examples are: Assistive technology (such as text-to-speech or speech-to-text), extended time, reduced-distraction environment (usually small group), use of a computer for longer answers/essays.
  • Classroom accommodations
    • Examples are: Accessible furniture, assistive technology for note-taking (such as digital recorders, SmartPens, notetaking apps), use of a computer or digital device for note-taking, captioned media.
  • Accessible materials
    • Examples are: Kurzweil 3000 (text-to-speech software), C-Pens, alternate format textbooks, captioned  media, accessible documents.
  • Communication access
    • Examples are: ASL interpreters, captioning services.
  • Accessible facilities
    • If your classroom or building is inaccessble or you experience physical barriers on campus, please contact OAR and we will work with appropriate parties for a resolution.
  • Other accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis as needed to remove barriers in course design, course policies, or course materials.

Some things to consider

  • It is the student's repsonsibility to self-identify, provide documentation of a disability, and to request accommodations through the OAR.
  • Accommodations do not transfer from K-12 or other colleges/universities. While many of the accommodations approved by the OAR might be the same as you received in high school, there may be other accommodations provided in high school that may not be reasonable or appropriate in college. Similarly, accommodations approved at another college or university might not be reasonable or appropriate at WCU.
  • All accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis after an analysis of the student's individual needs based on an interactive process and review of the doucmentation. For information on what documentation is needed, see the OAR Documentation Guidelines.
  • Once accommodations are approved, you are responsible for sending your Accommodation Letter to your instructors through the AIM Portal each semester.
  • You can apply for accommodations at any time. However, accommodations are not retroactive and faculty are not required to provide accommodations for students who have not followed this process to register with OAR and obtain an approved Accommodation Letter. Therefore it is important to connect with the OAR once you have accepted admission and/or enrolled in an academic course at WCU.
  • The process for Housing Accommodations is a separate process. Please see our Housing Accommodations page for more information.
  • If you have questions, please contact us at accessibility@wcu.edu or 828-227-3886.
