Dance Team

The ĢƵDance Team is a vital part of the Catamount community. The team brings spirit and energy to the football and basketball seasons and makes special appearances at campus and community events.

Dance Team Tryouts

Tryouts for the 2026-2027  season will be held on Saturday April 25th 9am-5pm & Sunday April 26th 9AM - 1PM at the ĢƵCampus Recreation Center Studio 1.

All interested students wanting to tryout, must complete the Registrations will be accepted until April 23rd, 2026.

Walk-ins will not be accepted.

The following are minimum requirements to audition:
  • Leaps (both directions) and leap in second
  • Tilt Jump, Switch Tilt, and Switch Arabesque
  • Calypso and Turning Disc
  • Double Turns (both directions)
  • Triple Turn (both directions)
  • Turns in second combination (two 8 counts)
  • Toe touch
  • Firebird
  • A choreographed Pom routine (minimum 6 eight counts)
  • A choreographed Hip Hop routine (minimum 6 eight counts)
  • A choreographed Jazz/Contemporary routine (minimum 6 eight counts)
  • Complete a 1-mile run (must be under 9:30 minutes)
  • Any additional advanced technique that you would like to show us
  • Optional skills: Kip up, Headspring, Aerial

Please note that we do not provide any choreography for tryouts, so feel free to create/use your own as you see fit.

If you cannot attend the in-person tryout, video submissions will be accepted. To submit a video tryout, email a video file or link to the video file to the ĢƵDance Team. Type "Dance Team Tryout Video Submission (date of submission)" in the email subject line. All videos must be emailed by April 23rd at 5pm (EST). We will not accept late submissions. **Please make sure to set viewing access to PUBLIC so that all the judges can view**

1. Introduction (Required)

Time: 30 seconds – 3 minutes

Include:

● Name, age, hometown

● Studio/team

● Brief dance background

Answer:

● Why do you want to be on a college dance team?

● Why would you be a good candidate?

● Intended major

● Why are you interested in WCU?

2. Skill Demonstration – Required (Film in One Continuous Take by Section)

Turns

● Double, triple, and quadruple parallel pirouettes (right)

● Double and triple parallel pirouettes (left)

● À la seconde turn combination (minimum 3 counts of 8)

○ Must show variation in speed, arm/leg positions, spots, floats, and technical elements

Jumps & Leaps

● Right open second leap

● Right calypso or turning jeté attitude

● Switch leaps (minimum 2; any variation, either side)

● Single toe touch

● Double toe touch

● Double turn to jump of choice

Flexibility

● Side tilt

● Penché

● Leg turn (any variety)

3. Optional Skill Demonstration

Time: Optional · 3 minutes maximum

Include any skills you can safely and successfully perform:

● Walkover (front or back)

● Side aerial (right/left), front aerial

● Standing back tuck, back handspring

● Headspring, kip up, rubberband, scorpion

● Advanced technical or specialty skills

4. Style Combinations (Required)

Time: 30–45 seconds per style

Three combinations:

● Jazz

● Pom

● Hip Hop

Clothing layers may be added for hip hop.

5. Solo Entry (Required)

Time: 3 minutes maximum

● One solo in any style

● May be filmed in a studio or from a competition

● Competition footage must be within 6 months of submission

6. Filming & Attire Requirements

● Skills may be repeated up to two times if needed

● No professional editing required

● Full body visible; dancer should be well lit

● Film straight on when possible

Attire

● Female: Black sports bra or tank top & black shorts

● Male: All black attire
