Program Requirements
Certificate in Technical and Professional Writing
Students who meet all entrance requirements and enroll full-time can complete the certificate in two semesters. Part-time students can complete the program at their own pace, typically within one to two years. All coursework must be completed within six years of admission.
Core Courses (9 Credit Hours)
All students complete the following core courses:
ENGL 613 – Technical and Professional Writing
Principles and practices of technical, business, and professional communication. Emphasis
on clarity, organization, audience analysis, and document design.
ENGL 615 – Editing for Publication
Advanced editing for grammar, style, and format in print and digital environments.
Focus on preparing professional-quality documents.
ENGL 616 – Writing for Digital Media
Exploration of writing and design strategies for websites, social media, and online
communication. Includes usability, accessibility, and content management.
Elective Courses (6 Credit Hours)
Students select two electives from the following:
ENGL 500 – Writing for the Workplace
Study and application of effective written communication for business, industry, and
non-profit settings.
ENGL 617 – Grant and Proposal Writing
Analysis and creation of persuasive proposals and grant applications for public, private,
and nonprofit organizations.
ENGL 618 – Writing in Health and Human Services
Communication strategies tailored to healthcare, social services, and other people-centered
professions.
ENGL 619 – Topics in Professional Writing
Rotating topics focusing on specialized areas such as environmental writing, UX content
strategy, or instructional design.
Completion Requirements
To earn the Certificate in Technical and Professional Writing, students must:

Complete 15 credit hours of approved coursework.

Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Successfully complete a final professional writing portfolio demonstrating mastery of program outcomes.
