Both programs are offered at our Cullowhee Campus and our Biltmore Park Instructional site in Asheville, NC.
The MSW is a 62 credit hour program that uses traditional classroom teaching and field practicum to develop Social Work practice competency. The Social Work curriculum helps students advance their research skills while covering a variety of subjects such as Direct Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups; Practice in Communities and Organizations; Social Policy; Mental Health; Addiction; Integrated Care; Child Welfare; and Human Behavior. Prospective students who have earned a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree within the last five years are eligible to apply for the Advanced Standing MSW program. The Advanced Standing MSW is a 33 credit hour program that can be completed in 10 months.
Students receive practice experience while in the program through completion of Field Placement. Students in the the standard program will complete two Field Placements while in the program. The first Field Placement is a 300 hour practicum that occurrs over one semester. The second Field Placement is a 600 hour practicum that occurs over two semesters. Students completing the Advanced Standing MSW program will complete the 600 hour practicum. Students have significant ownership over the type of placement and population they choose to work with in these learning experiences. The Director of Field Education works closely with each student throughout the process of finding, interviewing, and being officially placed at a site. The Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵDepartment of Social Work has relationships with over 200 agencies across Western North Carolina and beyon.
Where You'll Go

More About Our Master of Social Work Program
The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ prepares graduates for advanced professional practice in a wide range of social service settings. The program emphasizes ethical practice, cultural competence, evidence-based interventions, and a strong commitment to social justice. Students receive extensive hands-on training through supervised field placements in agencies serving individuals, families, and communities.
Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵoffers both Advanced Standing and Standard pathways, allowing students to progress at a pace that matches their educational background and career goals. Coursework builds skills in assessment, advocacy, policy analysis, clinical practice, community engagement, and leadership within human service organizations. Graduates are well-prepared for licensure as clinical social workers and for careers in mental health, healthcare, schools, nonprofits, child welfare, and community agencies.

MSW students should use these resources to navigate field placements, track progress, and prepare for post-graduation licensure. Requirements for clinical licensure differ by state, and relocation during the program may affect state authorization or financial aid.
