The Post-Masters Certificate in Addiction Studies is designed for students and professionals seeking focused preparation to work with
individuals, families, and communities affected by addictive disorders. The program
supports those pursuing or holding graduate degrees in social work or counseling,
as well as practitioners who want to meet the educational requirements for North Carolina
addiction-specialist credentials. Students gain a strong foundation in the science
of addiction, assessment, treatment methods, ethics, and cultural humility while developing
the competencies required for effective, evidence-based practice in the addictions
field. The curriculum prepares graduates to contribute to prevention, intervention,
and recovery efforts across a wide range of clinical, community, and behavioral health
settings.
This Post Baccalaureate Certificate is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills
of individuals working in the field of addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery,
and increase the number of qualified addictions specialists in North Carolina. The
four courses (12 credit hours) focus on the eight domains of addiction counseling, ethics,
clinical supervision, and HIV/AIDs and other communicable diseases.

More About Our Addiction Studies Program (ASP)
Addiction is a serious issue that causes problems for individuals, families, and communities
nationwide. The toll can be seen in hospitals and emergency departments, and is linked
not only to physical and mental health problems but also to family stress, domestic
violence, child abuse and neglect, and crime. The Department of Social Work offers
the 12-credit hour Addiction Studies Program (ASP) for students in the MSW or Clinical
Mental Health Counseling programs, and for practitioners seeking credentials as Licensed
Clinical Addictions Specialists (LCAS-A) or Master-level CADCs. The program meets
the 180 hours of addiction-specific education required by the North Carolina Addictions
Specialist Professional Practice Board.
Practitioners can take any or all courses after completing SOCW 520. Coursework strengthens
understanding of addiction treatment, cultural humility, and evidence-based practice
for professionals in social work, counseling, and related fields.
Students complete all coursework and supplemental training through the Addiction Studies
Program. These experiences fulfill NCASPPB educational requirements and prepare graduates
for LCAS-A licensure.
