Biology Undergraduate Concentrations

The Biology Program prepares students to succeed at the next level, whether that’s pursuing a career in biological research, health professions, business, or education, or going on to post-graduate studies.

Quick Access: Major Checklists

The following are major/concentration checklists effective beginning in Fall 2025. For more information regarding the curriculum changes enacted in Fall 2025, please refer to this letter provided by the Biology Department's leadership team outlining the changes. Within it, there is contact information for Department of Biology leadership should there be further questions.

The following are 10-semester plans for students pursuing the Accelerated Bachelor's-to-Master's (ABM) program in Biology.

Biology B.S. Concentration Options

A concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology allows students to study life at the smallest level. Students in this concentration focus on the study of cells; the molecules that combine to form them, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, and the like; and the structures of, functions of, and interactions between those cells and molecules.

This concentration is eligible for the Accelerated Bachelor's-to-Master's (ABM) program in Biology.

Possible Careers

The Cell and Molecular Biology Concentration prepares students for a wide range of fields, including roles such as:

  • biomedical or biotech researcher
  • physician or veterinarian
  • pharmaceutical researcher
  • and other lab-based professions

A gloved hand moves lab material on a table.

The Ecology, Evolutionary, and Organismal Biology Concentration examines how organisms function, how they interact with their environments, and how they have evolved over time. Students in this concentration tend to center their focus on plants and algae, invertebrates, arthropods, reptiles, birds, or mammals both at the individual level and the population level.

This concentration is eligible for the Accelerated Bachelor's-to-Master's (ABM) program in Biology.

Possible Careers

This concentration prepares students for roles such as:

  • conservation biologist
  • various specialized ecologist
  • wildlife researcher
  • and other field- or environment-centered professions

Ecology students examine samples collected from a creek.

Overlapping substantially with the Cell and Molecular Biology Concentration, students in this concentration focus primarily on life at the cellular and molecular levels. However, the Pre-Health Professional Concentration allows students to specialize toward further education in health-based areas.

This concentration is not eligible for the Accelerated Bachelor's-to-Master's (ABM) program in Biology.

Possible Career Paths

Students in this concentration often pursue areas such as:

  • pre-medicine
  • pre-health
  • pre-physician's assistant
  • pre-pharmacy
  • pre-dental
  • pre-veterinary, and others.

Lab students examine petri dishes.
