Meet Our Study Abroad Students!
"A few weeks into my time in Madrid, I can already say it has been a great learning and life experience. From meeting so many international students to being immersed in the Spanish culture, I have learned something from each encounter I've had so far and unlearned so many presumptions I came with.
As a double major in International Studies and Communication, it became clearer how much global policies drive the realities we live in and believe in. And how critical communication with understanding and respect is the best way to interact across cultural and social differences. This experience has ignited my passion to work internationally with a non-governmental agency to positively impact as many lives as possible."
“My biggest advice is to ask as many questions as possible. In Argentina and generally in Latin America people are super friendly and willing to answer questions. The Argentine accent is incredibly distinct which made it difficult to understand in the beginning, but I got accustomed to it. However, in nearly every conversation I have been asked where I am from because of my accent. It can be intimidating speaking in a foreign language, stumbling over words and making mistakes as you go but that is how you learn. I fully recommend getting out of your comfort zone and studying abroad.”
Study Abroad
The world is literally full of options for studying abroad. See the Office of Global Engagement website for more information.
Courses taken at a university abroad may be applied to the International Studies major, when approved by the Director. Students can choose a shorter study abroad experience (typically through a faculty-led trip over the summer or university holidays) or a more immersive experience (typically in the form of a semester of study at a foreign university).
For students who choose to study abroad for a semester, the International Studies Program may offer some financial support to help off-set costs. Interested students can apply for a $500 Global Catamount Award. Applications for this award are competitive. To apply, students must 1) be a declared International Studies major, 2) must have completed 45 hours of undergraduate coursework, 3) must be registered for study abroad in the next semester, and 4) must hold at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. If you meet the qualifications and are interested,
