International Tutor Certification

The WaLC and MTC's tutor training program has been certified by the College Reading and Learning Association’s  (±õ°Õ°Õ±Ê°ä). 

New tutors are trained via three courses: 

  • USI 202: Introduction to Peer Tutoring (required of all new course tutors and writing fellow)
  • USI 302: Intermediate Peer Tutoring and Mentoring (optional for all returning peer educators)
  • USI 402: Leadership in Peer Tutoring (optional for all returning peer educators) 

Three levels of certification are available for WaLC and MTC associates who successfully complete the training classes. Tutors become eligible for Level I Tutor Certification following successful completion of USI 202 and 25 hours of actual tutoring time. Level II (Advanced Certification) is awarded after successful completion of USI 302 and 25 additional hours of tutoring time. Level III (Master Certification) is achieved following successful completion of USI 402 and an additional 25 hours of tutoring. Certified tutors are recognized each spring during the WaLC/MTC Tutor Certification and Awards Reception. 

Topics covered in USI 202 include: communication skills, active listening and questioning strategies, course and syllabus analysis, evidence-based learning strategies, tutoring ethics, and more. 

The purpose and objectives of USI 202 are: 

  • To promote the status of student peer tutors at Western by qualifying WaLC/MTC tutors for certification through the  
  • To assist the learning and success of all Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµstudents by developing a competent, quality base of academic assistance
  • To assist faculty by preparing peer tutors to offer quality academic support outside of the classroom
  • To provide opportunities for tutors to develop their leadership abilities and to formulate goals for their personal learning and development
