Meet the OSC Staff

Paul Engler

Paul Engler

Director of Student Conduct

Paul is a former Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He investigated many different violations of federal law, but specialized in White Collar, Civil Rights, and Color of Law crimes. Paul earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Dayton School of Law and received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Ohio State University.  Before joining the FBI, he worked in pardon, expungement, and contract law.  He is passionate about centering people’s unique perspectives and relationships to their communities in all his professional work.

Paul enjoys spending time with his partner and finding new and exciting ways to wear out his two dogs, Indie and Sora. When not doing either one of those two things he can be found bouncing between weightlifting, video games, reading, baking, trail running, or half a dozen other interests that won’t be named here. He has yet to find anything truly boring and really wishes he did not have to sleep.

Melissa Day

Melissa Day

Assistant Director of Student Conduct

Melissa grew up in Salisbury, North Carolina. She spent her entire childhood vacationing in Western, North Carolina to see family, and fell in love with the mountains. Western Carolina University was the only place she wanted to attend college. Receiving her Bachelor of Science in Communication from WCU, she decided to make Cullowhee her home after she graduated in 2014. Melissa always says that it’s the mountains that brought her here, but it’s the people that kept her here. Melissa loves Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵand all the students, staff and faculty on this campus. Since graduating from WCU, she has worked at the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵbookstore, was the Administrative Assistant in the Advising Center and a Student Success Specialist in the Office of Student Retention.  Melissa joined the Office of Student Conduct in August 2023.

While Melissa has been an employee at Western, she also completed two Master’s degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. In her spare time, Melissa loves to write, make music with her guitar and drums, bake, kayak, and spend time with her family and friends.

Christian worked as a part-time graduate assistant in the Office of Student Conduct for the duration of the program and is thrilled for the opportunity to continue in the office as a full-time staff member.

Christian firmly believes that compassionate accountability and restorative justice practices are central to creating a conduct process that not only educates students about their rights and responsibilities but also empowers them to grow in a strengths-focused, self-authored way.

When he is not at WCU, Christian enjoys playing video games, reading horror novels, trying out new recipes, and spending time with his partner, Calista. He is also a proud pet parent to Sadie (Black lab/Pitbull mix), Magic (Tuxedo cat), and Barley (Golden Retriever, pictured).
