Legislative Priorities
Salary Increases
ĢƵand the UNC System continue to feel external pressure from other universities
and the private sector seeking to hire away our qualified faculty and staff. Years
of stagnant salaries have made faculty and staff retention a difficult and costly
threat. Since 2007, the average employee pay raise has been 0.9%. ĢƵaverages at
or below 12th across almost all occupational areas in the UNC system. WCU's mission
is to provide students with the education they expect and deserve. In order to fulfill
that mission, the University must have funds to recruit and retain high-quality faculty
and staff. We must do better for our employees and urge the General Assembly to continue
to provide meaningful raises to all state personnel.
Increase Funding for NC Promise
The campuses participating in the NC Promise Tuition Plan—WCU, UNC-Pembroke, and ECSU—work to ensure the program provides affordable, high-quality education while remaining financially sustainable. Funding levels are reviewed regularly to keep pace with enrollment growth, operating costs, and inflation. Adjustments in state appropriations and modest tuition mechanisms may be necessary over time to maintain access, support campus resources, and ensure the continued success of students participating in NC Promise.
Funding for Facility Repairs and Renovations
University facilities are valuable state assets and critical to our educational mission
and vital role in regional economic development. Unless ĢƵis provided adequate resources
for minimum facilities maintenance, taxpayer investment and public safety are at risk.
Over $40 million in critical repair and renovation is needed at ĢƵalone. The total
repair and renovation price tag for critical and not‐yet‐critical needs is over $200
million. Just a few of the areas in dire need of repair are campus‐wide roof replacements,
exterior wall repairs, renovation of current Steam Plant, steam line replacements,
sewer infrastructure improvements and fire safety needs.
