Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵHealth Services achieves 2 accreditation milestones
Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Health Services strives to meet the health care needs of the academic community and to enhance the physical, psychological, environmental and health education needs of the campus. Its primary goal is always to keep students well and in the classroom.
This winter, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵHealth Services achieved two significant accreditation milestones that affirm the department’s commitment to service through high-quality, patient-centered care.
In December 2025, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵHealth Services earned first-time accreditation from the Association for Ambulatory Health Care, a national accrediting body for outpatient facilities, including university health centers, outpatient surgical centers and medical home facilities. Less than 30% of university health centers nationwide hold AAAHC accreditation.
The three-year accreditation recognizes Health Services’ adherence to nationally-recognized standards for quality and safety in health care delivery and confirms for Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵstaff and student patients alike that the care provided to Catamounts meets the highest standards.
As part of the accreditation process, AAAHC surveyors conducted an on-site review of Health Services’ operations in the Bird Building. Physicians, nurses and administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory care, and specifically university health centers, examined everything from primary care services, surgical services, laboratory services, injection clinic care, patient education, quality improvement initiatives, business operations, human resource management and staff development to financial management and administrative oversight in the department.
Preparations for the survey began two years ago with a comprehensive self-assessment of policies, procedures and patient care practices. Staff described the process as a meaningful journey in self-reflection as they questioned and identified best to improve and strengthen services across every area of their operation.
In the initial survey, Health Services met all but one of AAAHC’s 168 rigorous standards. The single deficiency, related to a technical documentation requirement, was corrected promptly.
In addition to the AAAHC accreditation, the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵHealth Services laboratory was surveyed in February by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation and received the COLA Laboratory Excellence Award. The award recognizes laboratories that demonstrate excellence in quality testing, operational practices and patient care.
WCU’s laboratory has maintained COLA and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments accreditation for many years and undergoes rigorous evaluations every two years in order to continue performing laboratory testing. This marks the first time the WCU Health Services laboratory has received the COLA Laboratory Excellence Award.
Together, the accreditations highlight Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵHealth Services’ ongoing commitment to provide dependable, high-quality care for students throughout their time at college.
