ĢƵearns repeat recognition through IIE American Passport Project
ĢƵ has once again been selected by the Institute of International Education to receive an IIE American Passport Project grant—marking the university’s second time earning the competitive award.
ĢƵis among the sixth cohort of institutions chosen for the initiative, which aims to increase access to global education by helping Pell-eligible students obtain their first U.S. passport. The grant will cover the cost of a standard, non-expedited passport book for 25 ĢƵstudents, supporting their ability to pursue study abroad opportunities.
The American Passport Project continues to expand nationwide, helping remove a key financial barrier for students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to travel internationally. More information about this year’s awardees can be found in the full announcement from IIE:
ĢƵbegan awarding passports to selected students this spring.
The program prioritizes students with limited financial means (particularly first-year students) for whom obtaining a passport may be a first step toward international learning experiences.
In addition to providing passport funding, the awarded institutions support participants through outreach, advising and programming designed to prepare them for global engagement.
Alongside the grant, WCU’s Office of Global Engagement offers passport services to campus and the surrounding community.
ĢƵstudents, faculty and staff can have passport photos taken using the Iris Photo Booth located in the Center for Career and Professional Development in Reid 150. Students may also receive two free passport photos through the Office of Global Engagement.
“While convenient for ĢƵstudents, faculty and staff, the passport service is open to all community members of Western North Carolina and beyond,” said Wes Milner, director of the Office of Global Engagement. “We are thrilled to be able to award these passports to students who would not otherwise have this opportunity, while also extending these services to our broader community.”
Passport applications are accepted by appointment only. Hours of operation are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Cordelia Camp Building, room 109. For more information, contact passports@wcu.edu or call 828-227-7494.
