The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is the terminal practice degree in Nursing, and builds upon the student's current knowledge of clinical practice. The DNP program educates nurses prepared in advanced practice nursing roles (NP, CRNA, CNL, CNM, and CNS) or health systems/organizational leadership in clinical inquiry, scholarship, policy, and innovation in health care.
About the Doctors of Nursing Practice Program
What You'll Learn
Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Post-Master’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is a 34-credit-hour program designed for nurses who hold a master’s degree in an advanced nursing practice specialty and are ready to expand their impact on health care delivery, quality, and outcomes.
The curriculum prepares graduates to translate evidence into practice, evaluate and improve systems of care, lead quality and safety initiatives, and address health needs at the organizational, community, and population levels. Coursework includes evidence-based practice, epidemiology, program evaluation and quality improvement, applied biostatistics, global health and social justice, health care policy and ethics, health care economics and finance, and leadership and health care systems.
A central component of the program is the DNP Project and Practicum, completed across three sequential semesters. Through this experience, students develop, implement, evaluate, and disseminate an evidence-based scholarly project addressing a meaningful practice, organizational, or systems-level need. Students integrate advanced nursing knowledge, evidence, leadership, technology, quality improvement, and systems thinking to improve health and health care outcomes.
Students complete the required DNP practicum hours through experiences that support achievement of doctoral-level nursing competencies and the development and implementation of the DNP scholarly project.
Where You'll Go
The DNP prepares nurses to serve as leaders and change agents across a wide range of health care and academic settings. Graduates are prepared to apply evidence, evaluate outcomes, lead improvements in quality and safety, influence health policy, and help transform health care delivery.
Depending on their advanced nursing practice background and professional goals, graduates may pursue or advance roles in advanced clinical practice, health care leadership and administration, quality improvement, patient safety, population health, evidence-based practice, program development and evaluation, health policy, nursing education, and other areas of health care innovation and leadership.
The Post-Master’s DNP also provides doctoral-level preparation for nurses seeking to strengthen their leadership within health care organizations, contribute to nursing education, or lead initiatives that improve care for patients, populations, and communities.
Next Steps
The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree is for students already in possession of a Master of Science in Nursing who are looking to work at the highest clinical level. This doctoral degree will give you the opportunity to hold leadership roles within the health care system of public and private practices, can lead to administrative opportunities or you can choose to pursue teaching in a postsecondary environment.
