The LEAD Minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework. Of those credit hours, nine
are required courses and nine may come from approved electives. Within the elective
options there are three types of courses: LEAD Core Electives, LEAD Track Electives,
Partner-Program Electives. Students from any major may elect to complete the LEAD
Minor. LEAD Core Electives are leadership courses taught through the LEAD Minor and
highlight leadership in specific contexts. LEAD Track Electives are, generally, living
learning community classes for freshmen, as well as freshman leadership programming
courses and job training classes specific to on-campus employment. Partner-Program
Electives are non-LEAD courses that complement the mission and goals of the LEAD Minor.
These classes count for the minor and are taught by other majors.

More About Our Leadership Minor
WCU’s Leadership Minor helps students in any major develop the self-awareness, communication abilities, and collaborative leadership
skills needed to make a positive impact in professional, campus, and community settings.
Grounded in the Social Change Model of Leadership, the program emphasizes leadership
as a process focused on personal growth, ethical action, and contributing to the common
good.
Students explore topics such as leadership theory, group dynamics, diversity and inclusion,
conflict resolution, civic engagement, and global perspectives. Through elective pathways,
reflective learning, and a culminating capstone portfolio, students learn how to lead
effectively in teams, support meaningful social change, and apply leadership principles
within their chosen field or future career.
Students in the LEAD Minor explore leadership theory, ethical decision-making, team
and community dynamics, and civic engagement. Through coursework and reflective practices,
they learn how to lead inclusively, collaborate effectively, and adapt leadership
approaches to varied social, cultural, and organizational contexts.
This flexible structure allows students to shape the minor to fit their major, interests,
and goals — whether focusing on social justice, global perspectives, organizational
leadership, civic engagement, or community-based activism.
Preparation for meaningful civic or community engagement, social change roles, nonprofit
work, public service, organizational leadership, or entrepreneurial ventures — with
a broadened worldview and leadership mindset.
