What You'll Learn
This area of study is interdisciplinary, which means you can study the experiences of people of Hispanic or Latinx ancestry in the U.S. from many perspectives including Latinx literature, Spanish language and Latin American cultures, history of Latin America and Latinx populations in the U.S., education practices, sociological studies, and more.
The minor consists of six courses. Each student will be required to take 鈥淭he Introduction to U.S. Latinx Studies.鈥� The remaining five courses can come from a variety of departments including history, sociology, world languages, English and education. Many of these courses are also liberal studies courses and will count toward liberal studies electives.
Students who have graduated with this minor have already distinguished themselves by going on to graduate programs in Higher Education and Social Work. In the workforce, students draw on their coursework and experiences working with people of diverse backgrounds. The minor gives students a unique skill set to discuss in interviews with prospective employers.

More About Our Latinx Studies Minor
WCU鈥檚 Latinx Studies Minor gives students from any major the opportunity to explore the histories, cultures, identities, and lived experiences of Latinx communities in the United States. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum that draws from humanities, social sciences, world languages, education, and the arts, students develop a deeper understanding of Latinx contributions, challenges, and perspectives in an increasingly diverse society.
Coursework encourages students to examine topics such as migration and diaspora, social justice movements, cultural expression, public policy, community development, and Latinx representation in media and literature. With flexible elective options and a required introductory course, the minor allows students to tailor their studies to their interests while enhancing cultural awareness, critical thinking, and communication skills. Graduates gain valuable insights that support careers in education, public service, healthcare, business, nonprofit work, community engagement, and any field that benefits from intercultural competency.
Latinx Studies gives students tools to understand and analyze cultural, social, historical, and political issues affecting Latinx communities in the U.S. Through coursework and discussion, students explore identity, migration, culture, literature, social justice, and community engagement.
Because many of the elective courses also fulfill liberal-studies electives, students can often integrate the minor into their degree plans without adding much extra coursework. This flexibility makes the minor accessible to a wide range of students, regardless of major.
