Office of the Provost

WCU’s Office of the Provost oversees all academic programs of the university, including WCU’s six academic colleges as well as the Brinson Honors College, Hunter Library, Graduate School and Research, International Programs, the Cherokee Center, and Educational Outreach. The office also leads a number of student support services such as advising, registration, tutoring, and more.

The purpose of the Division of Academic Affairs is to support the provision of varied and well-rounded educational programs at the bachelor's, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral levels. These programs serve the needs of the people of the state and the region, as well as foster the development, preservation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge through effective teaching, learning, research, creativity, and service.

To accomplish its purpose, the academic area of the University is administratively organized into colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Allied Professions, Engineering and Technology, Fine and Performing Arts, and Health and Human Sciences.  The Honors College, Graduate School and Research, and Hunter Library are also part of Academic Affairs.

Other units of the University which are administratively responsible to the Division of Academic Affairs are the Office of Undergraduate Studies (including the Centers for Community Engagement and Service Learning, Career and Professional Development, and the Mountain Heritage Center); the Coulter Faculty Commons, Highlands Biological Station, Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines, Office of Global Engagement, and Office of the Registrar; the Office of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness; Educational Outreach (including Summer Session); the Cherokee Center; Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµPrograms in Asheville.

The Division of Academic Affairs has general responsibility for research administration (located within the Graduate School and Research).  Graduate School and Research is responsible for providing information and services concerned with funded research, sponsored programs, and other grant/contract activities. The Division of Academic Affairs also provides oversight for special units such as the Haire Public Policy Institute (located in the College of Arts and Sciences); the Small Business and Technology Development Center, the Center for the Study of Free Enterprise, and the Corporation for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (located in the College of Business); Suite 201 and the McKee Assessment and Psychological Services Clinic (located in the College of Education and Allied Professions); the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center and the Fine Arts Museum (located in the College of Fine and Performing Arts); the Speech and Hearing Center (located in the College of Health and Human Sciences); and the Center for Rapid Product Realization (located in the College of Engineering and Technology).

The Division of Academic Affairs cooperates with regional and state agencies to meet educational needs of the region. It works with federal agencies in a variety of ways including securing substantial grants. Through all of these centers, offices, and programs the University has reciprocal relationships with many community organizations and divisions.
