Engineering - Accelerated B.S./M.S. (ABM) Track
The Accelerated Bachelor’s–to–Master’s (ABM) in Engineering at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ offers motivated undergraduate engineering students a streamlined path to earning a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE)—often with only one year beyond the Bachelor of Science degree.
Designed exclusively for current Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵengineering undergraduates, the ABM program allows qualified students to begin graduate‑level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree. This accelerated structure helps students maintain academic momentum, reduce overall time to degree completion, and gain earlier access to advanced engineering concepts. Delivered on WCU’s campus in Cullowhee and located in the College of Engineering, the ABM pathway supports students who want to strengthen their technical credentials, enhance career readiness, and/or prepare for future doctoral study.
College of Engineering and Technology
What You'll Learn
ABM students engage with the same graduate‑level learning outcomes as traditional MSE students, while benefiting from early exposure to advanced coursework. The program focuses on:
- Advanced problem‑solving and engineering analysis
- Design, modeling, and system‑level thinking
- Applied research skills and technical communication
- Interdisciplinary approaches across engineering fields
By integrating graduate coursework into the final stages of the bachelor’s degree, students build advanced expertise sooner and gain confidence working at the graduate level.
Where You'll Go
Completing the ABM in Engineering prepares graduates to enter the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) program, supporting accelerated career growth and long‑term success. MSE graduates may pursue:
- Advanced or leadership engineering roles
- Positions requiring master’s‑level technical expertise
- Research‑oriented roles
- Applied engineering innovation pursuits
- Doctoral programs in engineering or related disciplines
The combination of undergraduate breadth and graduate‑level depth makes ABM graduates particularly competitive in a workforce with strong demand for engineers holding advanced degrees.
More About Our Accelerated Bachelor’s–to–Master’s (ABM) in Engineering
The ABM pathway reflects WCU’s commitment to affordability, academic efficiency, and student success. By allowing students to count selected coursework toward both BS and MS degrees, the program minimizes duplication while maximizing educational value. ABM students may take up to 12 graduate credits as undergraduates, which, once they are accepted into WCU’s MSE program, may be applied to the 30 graduate-level credits required for MSE degree completion. This structure makes it possible to complete the master’s degree with just one additional year of study.
Additionally, by taking graduate coursework during their senior year—when financial aid programs such as NC Promise and Catamount Commitment may apply—students can significantly reduce overall tuition costs. Eligible students may also continue to receive any unused Catamount Commitment support after transitioning from the BS to the MSE, making the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵMSE a highly affordable option.
The ABM pathway aligns especially well with Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ's B.S. in Electrical Engineering, B.S. in Engineering, and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering programs.
