University Scholar Award

The University Scholar Award recognizes exceptional faculty achievement in research, scholarship, and creative activities. This award is presented to a faculty member who has attained a position of prominence in their discipline through significant and sustained scholarly achievements and contributions. Evidence of such distinction may include peer-reviewed publications, sponsored research projects, creative works, juried art exhibitions, fine arts performances, and literary works.

Award Criteria: Nominees must be full-time tenured or tenure track faculty who have been employed at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ for a minimum of three years. Previous recipients of the University Scholar Award are not eligible for reconsideration until five years have passed since their last award. Faculty holding an administrative position above Department Head are not eligible.

Award: The Award is presented at the Spring Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards and Recognitions Ceremony. The awardee will receive $5,000 cash prize and an engraved plaque.

Application: The application is due January 26, 2026. The application must consist of:

  • A narrative of the candidate’s contribution to research, scholarship, and creative activities at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓÆµ (no more than 5 pages, single spaced, minimum 10-point font) that addresses the following criteria:
    • Description of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities at WCU
    • Overall Impact of Research (Regional, National, International)
    • Contribution to the Community and to University Scholarship
    • Continued Scholarly Agenda
    • Contributions to Student Education and Scholarly Development
  • A curriculum vitae
  • An internal letter of recommendation
  • An external letter of recommendation

The application is to be emailed as an electronic document to rstiles@wcu.edu. No hard copies will be accepted. Letters of support may be included in the electronic document or emailed separately to rstiles@wcu.edu.

Evaluation and Rubric: An awards subcommittee of the Research Council will review submitted applications and forward a recommendation to the Dean of Graduate School and Research. The Dean will then submit a final recommendation to the Chancellor for approval.

Description is detailed, comprehensive, and clearly demonstrates sustained scholarly or creative productivity.

Description is adequate but lacks depth or completeness in some areas; demonstrates a consistent but not sustained scholarly or creative productivity

Description is unclear, incomplete, or lacks evidence of significant activity.

2. Overall Impact of Research (Regional, National, International)

Impact is robust, well-articulated, and demonstrates recognition at regional, national, or international levels.

Impact is satisfactory, with some evidence of recognition beyond the institution and region (lacks national / international recognition).

Impact is limited, not scholarly, or not clearly articulated.

3. Contribution to the Community and to University Scholarship

Demonstrates significant contributions to the community or to the university’s scholarly environment, including leadership, collaboration, or interdisciplinary work.

Scholarly activities include some contribution to the community or the university; evidence of leadership, collaboration, or interdisciplinary work is limited.

Little significant contribution to the community or university scholarship is evident; no evidence of leadership, collaboration, or interdisciplinary work.

4. Continued Scholarly Agenda

Clear evidence of sustained advancement of a scholarly or creative agenda, including ongoing and planned work.

Scholarly agenda is sustainable but lacks long-term vision.

Limited or no mention of a scholarly agenda or future direction.

5. Contributions to Student Education and Scholarly Development

Actively mentoring students in research or creative work; clear evidence of student engagement and development.

Some involvement in student scholarly development is evident.
